The country’s largest public sector bank, SBI (State Bank of India), has made a very big and ambitious plan! The bank says that in the next 2 years, it is preparing to light up 40 lakh houses in the country, where electricity has not yet reached. SBI has made this plan to promote renewable energy. Under this, SBI will install solar energy equipment on the roofs of lakhs of houses. This is not just an initiative of a bank, but a big step towards bringing a revolution in the energy sector of India.
SBI’s Solar Rooftop Program
SBI says that it will light up 40 lakh houses with solar energy by the financial year 2026-27 to promote renewable energy in the country. According to the bank, the “SBI Solar Rooftop Program”, a scheme launched to play a leading role in India’s renewable energy transformation, aims to illuminate 40 lakh homes with solar energy by the financial year 2026-27. This scheme will not only provide energy security but will also improve the quality of life in both rural and urban areas.
This big announcement was made on the completion of 70 years

SBI has made this big announcement to mark the completion of 70 years of its establishment. The bank said that its agricultural loan has exceeded ₹ 3.5 lakh crore in the financial year 2024-25, which shows its commitment to farmers. In addition, the bank spent ₹610.8 crore under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, reaching 94 aspiring districts. These initiatives include healthcare, education, rural development, and environmental sustainability. This shows that the bank is not just focused on making profits but also on the welfare of society.
CSR also includes the environment
SBI’s CSR projects also include planting nine lakh trees in the Cauvery Valley and assistance for underprivileged students and disabled persons. The bank is also setting up a Centre of Excellence for Financing New Age Businesses such as renewable energy, e-mobility, data centers, semiconductors, green hydrogen, carbon emission reduction, and smart infrastructure. This reflects the bank’s visionary approach, where it is ready to meet the needs of the future.

How different is SBI’s scheme from the government scheme
SBI’s Solar Rooftop Scheme will be slightly different from the ‘Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme’ run by the government. Under this government scheme, the government has set a target of providing solar power to 1 crore houses across the country, while SBI has set a target of providing solar power to 1 crore houses across the country. The Solar Rooftop Scheme aims to provide solar power to 40 lakh homes across the country.
The bank says that this project will not only help in reducing conventional electricity consumption and dependence on natural resources, but will also help in environmental protection. Both schemes together will give India a strong position in the field of clean energy.
