Driving Licence Renewal: Driving without a valid driver’s license in India is a punishable offense under the Motor Vehicles Act. A license not only identifies you but also proves your physical and mental fitness to drive. People often continue to drive after their license expires, which poses a significant risk.
If you are involved in an accident or caught by the traffic police, you will not only face a hefty fine, but your insurance claim could also be rejected. Therefore, checking your driver’s license’s validity and initiating the renewal process promptly is crucial for your financial and legal well-being.
How long is your driver’s license valid
The validity period of a driver’s license is not the same for everyone. It depends on your age and the date of issuance. Generally, if you obtain a license at the age of 18, it is valid for 20 years or until the holder reaches the age of 40, whichever is earlier.
Once you cross the age of 40, the rules become stricter due to changes in your body. Between the ages of 40 and 50, your license must be renewed every 10 years. After age 50, this limit is further reduced, and renewal becomes mandatory every 5 years. The main purpose is to ensure that your vision and reflexes remain fit for safe driving as you age.
What is a Grace Period
Immediately after your license expires, the government grants you a special 30-day grace period, called the “Grace Period.” If you apply for renewal within this one month, you will not be charged any additional penalty and can only pay the standard government fee (approximately ₹400-₹500).
But be careful, this grace period is only for one month. Once these 30 days expire, your license becomes subject to a heavy penalty. Delays can cost ₹1,000 to ₹1,500, including renewal fees and fines. If you delay for more than a year, the RTO can permanently cancel your license, after which you will have to go through the arduous process of obtaining a learner’s license again.
Online Process for Renewal
In 2026, renewing your driving license has become completely digital and paperless. You can apply from the comfort of your home by visiting the Transport Department’s official ‘Sarathi’ portal. You will need your original driving license, Aadhaar card (for address and identity proof), and a recent passport-size photo.
It’s worth noting that if you are over 40 years old, you will also need to upload a medical certificate (Form 1-A) certified by a registered doctor. After filling out the online form and paying the fees, your new license is sent directly to your home via speed post.
