There is big news for ration card holders. The central government has made a new rule for ration cards. If any cardholder misses this rule, their card will be cancelled.
The government has said that it is now necessary to do e-KYC for the ration card. This e-KYC must be done every 5 years. If a ration card holder does not complete this, their card will be suspended, and they will not get free food grains.
The government says this rule is to bring more transparency in the ration system. The goal is to stop duplicate cards and fraud, so that free food grains reach the right people. It is also important to know that the Modi government has extended the free food grains scheme till the year 2029 under the Public Distribution System (PDS). About 80 crore people in the country are getting benefits under this scheme.
What is the New Rule of Ration Card?
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has issued a new notification. It says that all states must do e-KYC of all ration card holders every 5 years. The aim is to stop duplicate ration cards and remove people who are not eligible.
By doing e-KYC every 5 years, the names of people who are not eligible will be removed, and the right people will get the benefit of free food grains.
After How Many Years Can a Ration Card Be Made?
The new rule says that a ration card can be made only after a person turns 18 years old. People below 18 cannot get a ration card. This means only people aged 18 or above can get subsidized ration.
For children below 5 years, their Aadhaar card must be submitted. Once the child turns 5, their e-KYC must be done within one year.
When Will Ration Cards Be Cancelled?
According to the central government, if a person does not take ration for 6 months, their card will be suspended. This suspension is temporary and can be removed after proper documents are submitted.
States have been told to complete e-KYC within 3 months. If a person has ration cards from two states, one will be cancelled after checking. People will get 3 months to complete e-KYC and submit documents to keep their card active.
Now, the “first come, first serve” rule will be followed for new ration cards. States will also have to publish waiting lists on their websites to show the status of applications.
