Ration Card Now Mandatory Online, Know How to Apply Step-by-Step

Ration Card: If you reside in Delhi and wish to obtain a ration card, it’s crucial to understand that the entire procedure has transitioned to an online format. A ration card is not merely a way to access affordable wheat and rice; it is also a vital government document. It enables you to benefit from various government programs, subsidies, and the Public Distribution System (PDS).

The Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department of the Delhi government has fully digitized the ration card process to enhance transparency and convenience. New applications for ration cards will now only be accepted via the e-district portal, and offline applications are no longer an option.

Why is a ration card essential?

Ration cards grant eligible families access to grains and other food products at subsidized rates. They also function as identification and help facilitate the advantages of various government schemes. Millions of families in Delhi rely on ration cards. The government regularly approves new applications to replace those from individuals who have passed away, relocated, or returned their cards. A significant number of new ration cards are anticipated to be issued shortly.

Who is eligible to apply for a Ration Card?

Ration cards will be issued exclusively to families whose annual income does not exceed Rs 1.20 lakh, who are permanent residents of Delhi, who belong to the economically weaker section, and who qualify under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) or Priority Household (PHH) categories.

Key points of the new regulations:

1. The application process is now entirely online.

2. It is mandatory to provide the Aadhaar number for each family member.

3. The eldest woman in the household will be designated as the head of the family.

4. The income threshold has been raised to Rs 1.20 lakh.

5. Applications will undergo thorough scrutiny.

Who will not be eligible?

According to the new rules, those who own a four-wheeled vehicle, pay income tax, are in government employment, have a home electricity connection of more than 2 kilowatts, and own a house or land in a colony classified as A to E will not be eligible for a ration card. Previously, the annual income limit for a ration card was Rs 1 lakh, which has now been increased to Rs 1.20 lakh. This will allow more needy families to benefit from the scheme.
