Railways Luggage Rule- Big news for train passengers. A big update has come from Indian Railways, which is related to you. Actually, now railway passengers will have to be careful in the matter of luggage, because like the airport, the railways are also going to implement a new system of checking the luggage of the passengers.
Under the new system, your luggage will be weighed before boarding the railway station. Not only this, if your luggage weighs more than the prescribed limit, then you will also have to pay an additional charge. Now passengers will be able to carry luggage with them while traveling in Indian Railways as per the prescribed standards.
The weight limit of luggage will be strictly enforced at some major railway stations of the country. Just like airlines, there are preparations to fully implement these rules for train travel as well. According to the rule, the amount of free luggage allowed is different for different categories of travel.
For example, those traveling in first class AC coaches will be allowed to carry luggage up to 70 kg. For AC second class passengers, this limit will be 50 kg and for third AC and sleeper class passengers, the limit will be up to 40 kg. If we talk about passengers traveling on general tickets, then the weight of the luggage they can carry can be up to 35 kg.
For now, Northern Railway and North Central Railway have decided to start this system from the major stations of Lucknow and Prayagraj division. The railway stations that have been identified include Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Kanpur and Aligarh Junction. Apart from this, Lucknow Charbagh, Banaras, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh, Govindpuri and Etawah are also included in the list.
Railway officials say that these rules are necessary for both the safety and convenience of rail passengers, because many times passengers carry too much luggage with them, which creates problems in sitting and walking in the coach. They have termed extra luggage as a security risk.
The facility of booking your luggage has been started at the railway station, just like at the airport. If the bag or briefcase weighs more than the prescribed limit and this obstructs the boarding space, then there is a provision of imposing a fine on them as well. According to the Railway, if during checking luggage more than the prescribed limit and without booking is found, then a charge higher than the normal rate will have to be paid. Please note that passengers will be allowed to carry extra luggage up to 10 kgs, for more than this, luggage will have to be booked.
Indian Railways will also install electronic luggage machines at stations to enforce rules regarding passenger luggage and to run it smoothly. The weight and size of the passengers’ bags will be checked before entering the railway platform. Another special thing is that not only the weight of the passengers’ luggage, but also the size of their travel bags will be kept within this limit.
The meaning is clear that if the size of the bag is bigger than required then a penalty can be imposed, even if the weight is less than the limit. According to Kuldeep Tiwari, Senior DCM of Lucknow Northern Railway, this step is being taken for the convenience of passengers.
