Q-Mitra: There is a huge relief for railway passengers. Last year, Indian Railways made updates to the online Tatkal ticket booking system to enhance passenger convenience. An Aadhaar-based OTP system was introduced, making online ticket booking significantly safer and simpler. The most notable advantage has been the reduction of ticket brokers who create fraudulent accounts to steal tickets.

However, the touts discovered a workaround. Instead of booking online, they shifted to ticket counters (offline) at railway stations, using fake IDs to reserve Tatkal tickets. This directly impacted regular and needy passengers. Now, the Railways is ready to put an end to this tactic of the touts once and for all.

Q-Mitra system launched, testing begins

To alleviate the issues faced by passengers at ticket counters, the Railways has introduced a new system called Q-Mitra, which is currently in the testing phase.

This initiative has been rolled out at the Begusarai railway station in Bihar, which is part of the Sonpur division of the East Central Railway (ECR). The offline ticketing system has been implemented at Begusarai station, effectively banning touts from operating there.

What is the Q-Mitra system?

In simple terms, Q-Mitra is a digital token system designed to manage the long and chaotic queues that often form at the instant counter. With this system in place, only legitimate passengers will be able to obtain tokens.

To receive a token, passengers must register using their mobile number and Aadhaar card. Each Aadhaar card and mobile number can generate only one token.

How will this smart system function?

The entire process is crafted to be highly transparent and secure: 1. Just before the Tatkal counter opens, a digital token will be sent to the passenger’s registered mobile number, which will include a QR code. 2. Passengers must then proceed to the Tatkal counter with this token. 3. Biometric authentication will be conducted through a machine set up at the counter. 4. Facial recognition will be used. Only if the face of the person standing at the counter matches the face of the person holding the Aadhaar card will they be issued an instant ticket. 5. Due to this tight security, touts will not be able to obtain tokens using fake IDs. Passengers will enjoy these six major benefits:

Language-friendly: The Q-Mitra system is designed to support multiple Indian languages. In addition to Hindi and English, the system also supports regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Punjabi.

Preventing fraud: The system is completely Aadhaar-based, so no one will be able to use someone else’s or fake ID.

Facial Authentication: The system features facial recognition. Only those with an Aadhaar card will be able to purchase tickets at the counter.

Smart Token Limit: This system has a set limit. Only one token per Aadhaar card is available per day. This will prevent bulk booking by brokers.

Separate queue system: To avoid crowding for AC and Non-AC tickets, separate queues and tokens have been arranged for both the categories.

Works even without internet: This system is capable of working offline. This means that generating tokens won’t be a problem even without an internet connection.
