Public Holidays in 2026: The Maharashtra government has published a list of public holidays for the year 2026. These holidays are established under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. As per this list, these holidays will apply to government offices, institutions, schools, and colleges throughout the state. The government’s list features 24 public holidays for the entire state. Additionally, special holidays have been set aside for banks.

Public Holidays 2026

The year will kick off with a Republic Day holiday on Monday, January 26, 2026. Following that, there will be holidays for Mahashivratri on Sunday, February 15, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti on Thursday, February 19. March will bring several holidays, including Holi, Gudi Padwa, Ramzan-Eid (Eid-ul-Fitr), Ram Navami, and Mahavir Jayanti. In April, Good Friday on April 3 and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14 will be observed as holidays. May will see Maharashtra Day and Buddha Purnima celebrated on the same day, May 1, while Bakrid, or Eid-ul-Zuha, will be a holiday on May 28.

Independence Day and festival holidays

On August 15, 2026, both Independence Day and the Parsi New Year will occur on a Saturday. Monday, September 14, will be a holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi. In October, Gandhi Jayanti will be observed on October 2, and Dussehra will take place on October 20. November will feature two holidays related to Diwali. Diwali Amavasya, or Lakshmi Pujan, will be celebrated on November 8, followed by Bali Pratipada on November 10. Additionally, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be observed on November 24, and Christmas will be celebrated on Friday, December 25.

Distinct holidays for banks and government offices

Banks will have a day off on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, for their yearly financial closing. This day off is exclusive to banks and does not extend to government offices. Additionally, state governments and local entities will enjoy another holiday on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, in celebration of Bhai Dooj.
