PAN Card Update: If you haven’t obtained a PAN card yet and are planning to apply for one soon, this information is crucial for you. The government has made a significant change to the rules governing PAN cards. Having an Aadhaar card is now mandatory for obtaining a new PAN card. This rule has been in effect since July 1, 2005. This means that a new PAN card will not be issued without an Aadhaar card.

Previously, documents like identity proof and birth certificate were sufficient for obtaining a PAN card. However, under the new rule, providing your Aadhaar number is mandatory during the application process. Additionally, the Aadhaar card must be verified through an OTP (One-Time Password). The PAN card will not be issued until this process is complete. This entire process can be completed online through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.

Existing PAN Card Holders: Know the Rules

If you already have a PAN card and haven’t linked it to your Aadhaar yet, you have until December 31, 2025, to do so. Failure to link your PAN and Aadhaar by the deadline may result in your PAN becoming inactive. Furthermore, a delay in linking may also incur a penalty of up to ₹1,000. With an inactive PAN, you will not be able to file income tax returns or conduct banking or other financial transactions easily.

PAN-Aadhaar Linking Status

According to government data, approximately 74 crore PAN cards have been issued in the country as of March 2024. Of these, about 60.5 crore PAN cards have already been linked to Aadhaar. Those who haven’t yet completed this process should do so as soon as possible to avoid any future problems.
