There is more than ₹78,213 crore of unclaimed deposit in the banks of India. This is the money that has no owner right now. In simple words, this money belongs to people who had deposited it in the bank but forgot to withdraw it, or their family members could not access the account for some reason.

The Finance Ministry has said that this unclaimed money has been transferred to the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). To help people find and claim this money, the RBI has launched an online portal called UDGAM (Unclaimed Deposits – Gateway to Access Information Portal). Through this portal, you can check if any unclaimed amount belongs to you.

If money is deposited in a current account, fixed deposit, or savings account, and no transaction is made for 10 years after maturity, then that deposit is marked as unclaimed. If no one claims it, the bank transfers the amount to the DEA Fund of RBI.

To make sure this money reaches the right person, the RBI has taken many steps. The UDGAM portal is one of those steps to help people claim their forgotten or unclaimed deposits easily.

RBI Started UDGAM Portal to Find Unclaimed Money

The government told in Lok Sabha that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has started a new website called UDGAM. The full name is Unclaimed Deposits – Gateway to Access Information. This website helps people find money that was left in bank accounts and not used for many years.

As of 1 July 2025, more than 8,59,000 people have signed up on the UDGAM portal. This website shows unclaimed money from all banks in one place. People can check if they have any unclaimed deposit and take steps to get it back. All these accounts are part of the DEA Fund. You can also check details about this fund on the same portal.

Can You Get the Money Back?

Yes, you can get your unclaimed money back. First, you need to contact your bank. The bank will check your documents. If everything is correct, they will return the money to you. This money will come from the DEA Fund.

There is no last date to claim this money. You can do it any time. But it is better to keep using your bank account and keep your details updated, so this situation does not happen again.

How to Check the Unclaimed Money?

To make it easy, the RBI started the UDGAM portal. If you think you or your family have money in any bank that was left unclaimed, you can check by following these steps:

First, go to the UDGAM portal and click on Register. Use your mobile number to sign up. Then login with the OTP. After logging in, write the name of the person whose money you want to find.

Then select the bank name from the list, or choose “All” if you are not sure. After that, you need to enter one detail like PAN number, Voter ID, Driving License, Passport number, or Date of Birth. After filling in the details, click on Search. If there is any unclaimed money in that name, it will be shown on the screen.
