OCI Card New Rules: Govt Removes 6-Month Stay Rule, Announces New Fees & Key Changes

OCI Card Rules: The Indian government has introduced some major and user-friendly updates to the process of getting Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards. Starting from April 1, 2026, these new rules are designed to make things easier and more digital for the diaspora. The biggest change is that the six-month stay requirement for foreign nationals applying from India has been removed.

Key Takeaways

Quick Read
  • 6-month stay requirement removed
  • New Fee Structure for OCI Card (Revised Fees)
  • Rules for children and foreign spouses:
  • Documents required for application

6-month stay requirement removed

Previously, anyone applying for an OCI card from India needed to have lived there for at least six months to show their ordinary residence. But with the new update, effective April 8, 2026, eligible foreign nationals can apply as soon as they arrive in India. No more waiting for six months, as long as they have a valid visa and all necessary documents.

New Fee Structure for OCI Card (Revised Fees)

Starting April 1, 2026, new fees for OCI services are as follows:

New application in India: Rs 15,000 (via demand draft).

New application abroad: 275 USD (or the equivalent in local currency).

Change in details/Reissue after 20 years: 25 USD (around Rs 2,100).

Loss or Damage to Card (Duplicate): 100 USD (about Rs 8,300).

Late passport update (after 3 months): 25 USD late fee.

Digital e-Arrival Cards are now a must. Physical paper forms are no longer accepted for OCI cardholders traveling to India. You need to get a Digital e-Arrival Card before you board your flight. Plus, the government has completely stopped accepting PIO cards as valid travel documents.

Rules for children and foreign spouses:

Apostille of birth certificates is now required. Luckily, in some situations, children won’t have to visit a Verification Centre (VFS) if they have parental consent.

For foreign spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders, they will need to upload their new photo, passport details, and a marriage declaration online every time they renew their passport.

Documents required for application

Foreign passport and proof of citizenship (Naturalization Certificate).
Proof of Indian origin (old Indian passport or surrender certificate).
Proof of address in India (Rent Agreement or Utility Bill).
Recent passport size photo and signature.
Apostilled birth certificate for children.
