The 100 Days Work Scheme is set to undergo further changes and may continue being referred to as ‘Pujya Bapu’ Rural Employment Guarantee. The Modi Government is likely to extend the working guarantee from a period of 100 Days to 125 Days under the Proposed Change. The Union Cabinet may announce this change. In the near future, legislation will likely be introduced regarding the new name for the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee) which will now be known as the ‘Pujya Bapu’ Rural Employment Guarantee Bill 2025.
The Cabinet of the Union Government Will Likely Approve the New Name
Based on a Report from Money Control, The Union Cabinet Will Likely Approve the Change from the MGNREGA to ‘Pujya Bapu’ Rural Employment Guarantee Bill, 2025.
What else will be passed?
Sources told Money Control that the proposed renaming is aimed at giving a new identity to the Employment Guarantee Scheme. Besides, its scope will be made stronger and wider. Along with the naming proposal, the Union Cabinet is also expected to pass the Vikas Bharat Education Institutions Bill, 2025, which aims to bring major reforms in the education sector.
What does the 100-Day Work Policy Consist Of?
MGNREGA is one of the Indian government’s most important rural welfare programs. Under this program, rural households can receive 100 days of guaranteed paid employment each year by participating in simple manual labor (that does not require specialized training or skills). The MGNREGA contains several features, including transparency, social audits, and timely wage payments that make it a rights-based program.
What Are its Benefits?
In the face of the increasing demand for employment during the COVID-19 pandemic and the significant influx of returning migrant workers, MGNREGA has been critical in meeting demand. Additionally, MGNREGA has attracted many women who would otherwise have been forced to rely on informal labor markets by providing paid employment opportunities close to home.
