Major Relief for Road Accident Victims, Cashless Treatment Up to Rs 1.5 Lakh

Cashless Treatment Scheme:  Approximately five lakh road accidents occur in India every year. These accidents claim the lives of about 180,000 people. Many of these deaths could be prevented with timely medical treatment. Often, the biggest problem after an accident is the cost of treatment. It is crucial to take the injured person to the hospital immediately, but the question of who will bear the cost of treatment often becomes a matter of life and death.

In many cases, neither are they nearby nor can money be arranged immediately for treatment. To address this major problem, the central government is launching a new scheme that will provide cashless treatment to people injured in road accidents.

PM Modi to Launch the Scheme

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon launch a cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims across the country. A pilot project of this scheme is already running in some states, and preparations are underway for its formal launch.

Nitin Gadkari said that the objective of this scheme is to reduce deaths caused by a lack of timely medical assistance in road accidents. A meeting on decisions related to the scheme also discussed important issues such as road safety, passenger convenience, ease of doing business, and vehicle regulations.

Which Accidents Will the Scheme Cover?

This scheme will apply to all road accidents involving the use of motor vehicles. Regardless of the type of road on which the accident occurred, if it involves a motor vehicle, the victim will be entitled to cashless treatment under this scheme. This means that the injured person will not have to pay out of pocket for treatment, ensuring they receive timely medical care.

How Much Financial Benefit Will Be Provided?

The Ministry of Road Transport launched a pilot project of this scheme in Chandigarh on March 14, 2024. Later, it was expanded to six states. Based on this experience, preparations are now underway to implement it across the entire country. Under the Ministry of Road Transport’s Road Accident Victim Cashless Treatment Scheme 2025, victims of any accident will receive treatment for a maximum of seven days from the date of the accident. During this period, treatment up to a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh per accident will be completely cashless.
