This subsidy is in addition to the existing Rs 300 subsidy available for customers who are already beneficiaries of the programme and is effective for the same customers for the next financial year as well. This means that the Union Cabinet of India’s Government, under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has reapproved the PMUY scheme and included it for the current financial year 2022-23.
Under the PMUY scheme, customers will receive a subsidy to purchase Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) through a total of 9 refills per annum (4.5 refills of each 5 kg cylinder) at a cost of Rs 12,000 Crores for the year 2025-26. The country will require 60% of its total yearly requirements of LPG through imports; therefore, to maintain affordability for PMUY beneficiaries during times of fluctuating global LPG prices, the Government created and continues to provide this subsidy.

Initially, in May 2022, the Government provided a Rs 200 subsidy per 14.2 kg cylinder with an allowance for 12 yearly refills; this subsidy was increased to Rs 300 for October 2023 and will allow an additional series of refills for 12 refills yearly; however, now the PMUY will only have the 9 cylinder limit.
LPG usage increases among PMUY households
Statistics show that there has been a significant improvement in LPG usage among PMUY beneficiaries. The per capita consumption (PCC), which was around 3 refills in 2019-20 and 3.68 refills in 2022-23, has increased to around 4.47 refills in 2024-25.
What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?
Launched in May 2016, PMUY aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from low-income families across India. As of July 1, 2025, there are around 10.33 crore PMUY connections across the country. Each PMUY beneficiary will get a deposit-free connection, which will include a safety deposit for cylinder, pressure regulator, safety hose, DGCC booklet and installation charges.

What are the benefits provided
Under Ujjwala 2.0, the first refill and an oven are provided free of cost. The entire cost of these items is borne by the government or the oil marketing companies. So the beneficiaries do not have to pay anything for the initial setup.
Originally, the Modi government had created the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for such families who cannot afford to buy ordinary gas cylinders. This time too, the subsidy on cylinders has been maintained.
