New Delhi: The ongoing fierce conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran is impacting numerous countries. Imports and exports through the Strait of Hormuz region have declined significantly, raising the spectre of inflation in many nations. Meanwhile, in India, the supply of LPG cylinders is also facing severe disruptions. Amidst this sudden panic, people are rushing to book LPG cylinders in haste.

Capitalising on this chaotic rush, cyber fraudsters are exploiting people’s urgency to swindle them. If you are currently trying to book a cylinder, you must remain vigilant against cyber scammers; otherwise, you might suddenly discover that funds have vanished from your bank account. To alert the public, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has shared a video on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

This video illustrates how cyber fraudsters are instilling fear in people to coerce them into making hasty bookings. During this process, they utilise fake links, mobile applications, and QR codes to steal money and personal information from unsuspecting individuals.

Learn How the LPG Booking Scam Operates

Cyber fraudsters are constantly devising new methods to execute their scams. Cases of online fraud committed under the guise of LPG cylinder bookings have surged significantly. In this scheme, fraudsters circulate messages via SMS, WhatsApp, or social media platforms. These messages typically claim that there is a gas shortage—necessitating an immediate booking—or they lure users with offers of attractive discounts.

These messages are accompanied by a link that is designed to look exactly like a legitimate website. In some instances, users are instructed to download a specific mobile app or to scan a QR code to process a payment. As soon as a user proceeds through these links or apps, they are prompted to provide their OTP, PIN, or bank account details. If the user divulges this information, the fraudsters can easily steal their money and personal data. The police have issued strict advisories urging the public to protect themselves against such fraudsters.

How to Protect Yourself from Cyber Fraudsters

To safeguard yourself, it is essential to understand and adhere to a few key precautions. To prevent this, never open or install unknown links or APK files received via SMS or WhatsApp. Book your gas cylinders exclusively through official apps (such as myLPG.in, or the Indane/HP/BPCL apps).

Users should never share their OTPs, UPI PINs, or bank details with anyone claiming to represent a gas agency. If you have any doubts, verify the request by calling your actual gas distributor directly. In the event of a financial fraud, immediately block your bank account and report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.

How to Identify Fake Websites

To identify a fake website, you must carefully check the website’s URL and look for the HTTPS (security indicator).

Furthermore, fake websites often contain minor spelling errors.

Additionally, they typically attempt to lure users with promises of quick bookings or special offers, subsequently demanding immediate payment or personal details.

Be extremely vigilant if you are asked to provide your OTP, UPI PIN, or banking information.
