What is Kanya Sumangala Yojana?

Launched in October 2019, this scheme is considered a major initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government. Initially, the scheme provided a total assistance of Rs 15,000, which has been increased to Rs 25,000 from the financial year 2024-25. This amount is not disbursed in one lump sum, but in six separate installments tied to key milestones related to a girl’s birth, vaccination, and education. The scheme aims to reduce gender discrimination, prevent child marriage, promote the health and education of girls, and foster positive thinking in society.

How much amount is received in which stage?

The Kanya Sumangala Yojana disbursement is made in six phases. The first phase provides financial assistance upon the birth of a girl child. The second phase provides assistance upon completion of one year of immunization. The third phase provides funding upon admission to Class 1. The fourth phase provides funding upon admission to Class 6.

The fifth phase provides assistance upon admission to Class 9. The sixth phase provides the final installment upon admission to graduation or a diploma course of two years or more after passing Class 12. The final amount is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account via DBT.

Who gets the benefit of the scheme?

The Kanya Sumangala Yojana benefits only daughters from families residing in Uttar Pradesh. To qualify for this scheme, the annual family income must not exceed 3 lakh rupees. Furthermore, a maximum of two daughters per family can benefit from the scheme. Furthermore, a family must have only two children to qualify for this scheme. However, in special circumstances, such as twins in the second delivery, the third girl child can also benefit from the scheme.

How can you apply for the scheme?

The application process for this scheme is completely online. Registration can be done through the Citizen Service Portal on the official website of the Department of Women and Child Development. During registration, you must enter your Aadhaar number, mobile number, and other necessary information, and after OTP verification, you receive a user ID.
