Jammu–Srinagar Direct Train: Direct train service from Jammu to Srinagar will begin by the end of this year. Indian Railways officials have indicated that this historic launch could happen before the end of the year. The launch of a direct train between these two cities will be a major milestone in rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country. Currently, the Vande Bharat train operates between Katra, a town in Reasi district, and Kashmir.
According to the Indian Railways, all ongoing operational and redevelopment work in the Jammu division will be completed by November 30th. Once this work reaches its final stage, a decision will be made to operate trains directly from Jammu station to Srinagar. Railway officials stated that the project’s progress was initially slowed due to flash floods. However, the Railways is now working with full force and striving to meet all targets within the stipulated time.
An official said, “Two types of work are underway at Jammu station: civil structures and track work. Track work is nearly complete, while new platforms, modern facilities, a waiting area, and a station building are in the final stages. All work is expected to be completed by the end of November. Progress is being continuously monitored to ensure the Jammu-Srinagar connection is established as soon as possible.”
USBRL was India’s most challenging rail mission
The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is considered an engineering marvel of Indian Railways. The entire project passes through the lofty Himalayan mountains. This route includes the world’s highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge, and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge. These two engineering marvels have given India a new identity on the global rail map. The rail line is now fully operational, providing year-round connectivity regardless of weather and promoting socio-economic development in the region.
