Indian Railways is the most widely used mode of transportation in the country, with over twenty million passengers traveling by train daily. A significant number of these travelers are accompanied by children. The railways have established specific regulations regarding children’s fares. Based on their age, some children are exempt from ticket fees, while others are required to pay half the fare. To prevent any inconvenience or penalties, it is essential for all railway passengers to familiarize themselves with the rules concerning children’s tickets.
Who can travel for free
Children under the age of five can travel for free on Indian Railways, a benefit applicable in both general and reserved coaches. However, it is important to note that these children do not receive separate berths. If a parent wishes to secure a berth for a child under five, the full fare must be paid. For children aged between five and twelve years, a half ticket is required, meaning only half of the standard fare is applicable.
If a seat is requested during the reservation process, the full fare will be charged; if no seat is requested, only the half fare will apply. It is also important to highlight that there is no “no seat option” (NSOB) available for children in Chair Car, Executive Class, Second Class Seating, and Executive Class AC categories, necessitating the purchase of a full ticket for children in these classes.
Parents need to carry childs age proof certificate
For children aged twelve years and older, a full ticket must be purchased, as the half ticket policy applies solely to those between five and twelve years of age. To benefit from the railway’s fare regulations, parents must present a birth certificate and other identification documents when booking tickets for their children. These documents are required to verify the child’s actual age and to prevent misuse of the fare rules. If a child aged five or older travels without a ticket, the parent may face a fine if caught.
