People often wish to travel on a side berth, especially on a side lower berth to enjoy the journey more. Without knowing this perticular rule, your journey on side berth can be spoiled.
Millions of people in India travel by train every day. This includes both local and interstate travel. For long-distance journeys, the Railways operates sleeper trains, meaning you can sleep overnight in them. The seating arrangement on the train is such that there are six seats on one side of the aisle, and only two on the other side, adjacent to the window. These are called side berths. These seats open from the middle and function as chairs. You can often see passengers with RAC tickets traveling on these seats.
What is the rule
However, people with full tickets also travel on these. During the day, people generally use them as a chair. But can a person who has been assigned a berth sleep during the day if they wish? This question remains in the minds of passengers. What are the railway rules in this regard? Let’s find out.
Sleep timing during train journey in India
The Railways doesn’t have any specific rules regarding sleeping on the lower side berths. The same rules apply to the main berths as to the side berths. The rule is that you can sleep from 10 pm to 6 am, and during that time, the person on the upper berth must return to their seat. They can’t stop you from sleeping on that seat, as the entire seat is allotted to you.
However, if you want to sleep during the day, you must ask your co-passenger for permission. If they want to move to the lower seat after 10 p.m., you can’t force them to move. If you have a physical problem, you can discuss it with your co-passenger and persuade them to give you the full seat during the day.
