The Government of India has launched the groundbreaking e-Passport feature to modernize the air travel documentation system. This e-Passport not only strengthens security but also speeds up immigration checks and is compliant with global travel standards. It is set to bring about a major technological change in the way Indians travel abroad in the coming years.
What is an e-Passport

An e-Passport looks similar to a traditional Indian passport, but its unique feature is that it has an electronic chip embedded in its back cover. This chip securely stores the passport holder’s personal and biometric information. This includes highly confidential information such as fingerprints, facial recognition data, and a digital signature.

What are the biggest advantages of an e-Passport?
The e-passport offers several powerful benefits that will significantly simplify global travel for Indian citizens in the digital age:
- Chip-based verification will make the immigration clearance process super-fast for travelers.
- The biggest advantage is that the chip significantly reduces the risk of identity theft or counterfeiting.
- This is a major step towards a smart and secure travel ecosystem, improving the global acceptance of Indian passports.
Who can obtain an e-passport, and where can they be obtained
Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can also apply for an e-passport. However, this facility is currently available only at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) across India.
Therefore, before applying, please check whether e-passports are being issued at your nearest passport office. The government plans to gradually expand this service across the country so that new applicants and passport renewers can benefit from this upgrade.
What is the application process for an e-passport

The application process for an e-passport is the same as for a regular passport.
Register on the official Passport Seva portal.
Fill out the online form, pay the required fees, and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.
During the appointment, the applicant’s biometric data, such as fingerprints and a photo, are taken.
After the process is completed, an e-passport with an electronic chip is printed and sent to the applicant’s registered address.
