What to do first if you lose your driving license?

If your driving license is lost or stolen, you should first go to the nearest police station. There you should file an FIR for the loss of the driving license and keep a copy of it with you. Which you can show to the traffic police while driving. After this you should apply for a duplicate driving license.

Process to get duplicate driving license

1. Online method

Step 1: For this, first of all you have to visit the website of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways https://parivahan.gov.in.

Step 2: After this, you have to click on the “Online Services” option on the homepage and then click on “Driving Licence Related Services”.

Step 3: Then you have to select the name of your state. After this you have to select “Apply for Duplicate DL” or similar option.

Step 4: Then you have to fill in the license number, date of birth and other details. If you do not know the license number, you can also submit the FIR details.

Step 5: You have to upload documents like FIR copy, identity proof (like Aadhaar card), address proof (like ration card), and photo upload.

Step 6: Then you have to deposit the fees online and schedule an appointment at the RTO. After this the duplicate DL will be sent to your address through post in a few days.

2. Offline method

Step 1: After filing the FIR, you will have to go to the RTO office where your original license was made.
Step 2: Take the LLD (Loss of License Declaration) form from the RTO. This is used to get a duplicate DL.
Step 3: Fill the form carefully, like name, address, license number and reason for loss of license.
Step 4: Carry a copy of the FIR, proof of identity (Aadhaar card, voter ID), proof of address (ration card, electricity bill), 2 passport size photographs, copy of original DL (if any) with you to the RTO.
Step 5: Pay the duplicate driving licence fee. This may vary from state to state.
Step 6: Your photo, signature, and thumb impression will be taken at the RTO.
Step 7: After submitting the form, you will get a receipt containing the application number. Keep it safe.
Step 8: After the completion of the process the duplicate driving licence will be sent to your address by post within a few days.
