PMVY: The government’s objective has always been to ensure that development schemes reach every section of society and empower people to become self-reliant. With this in mind, the central and state governments implement new schemes from time to time. One such important scheme is the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana (PM Vishwakarma Skill Honour Scheme), which was launched by the central government in September 2023. This scheme aims to strengthen the work of traditional artisans and craftspeople by providing them with modern training and financial assistance.
What is the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana?
This scheme is designed for those who have been earning their livelihood through traditional skills and handicrafts for generations. The government wants these artisans to connect with modern technology and better resources so that their income can increase and their work can evolve according to market demands.
Why are Rs. 500 given daily during training?
Beneficiaries enrolled in this scheme receive special training for a few days. This training equips them with modern skills relevant to their traditional work. During the training period, the government provides a stipend of Rs. 500 per day so that their income is not affected while they are learning. This benefit is available only to those who are registered under the scheme.
Benefits of Toolkits and Financial Assistance
Under the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana, beneficiaries receive assistance of up to Rs. 15,000 to purchase toolkits. This allows artisans to buy the necessary tools for their work and improve the quality of their production. The scheme also provides access to loans at low-interest rates.
Loans in Two Phases
In the first phase of this scheme, a loan of up to Rs. 1 lakh is provided, which has to be repaid within 18 months. After successfully repaying the first loan, beneficiaries can avail an additional loan of up to Rs. 2 lakhs in the second phase. This second loan can be repaid over 30 months, allowing artisans to expand their work without significant financial pressure.
