LPG Insurance Cover: Cooking gas has become a necessity in almost every household in India. Thanks to the government’s Ujjwala Yojana and other initiatives, LPG penetration has rapidly increased in cities as well as villages. However, few people know that a gas connection also comes with a comprehensive accident insurance cover at no additional cost. This insurance is provided to provide financial security to the family in case of any cylinder-related accident.
Insurance Available on Gas Connection
When a new LPG connection is purchased or an old one is renewed, consumers automatically receive a fixed insurance cover from the company. There’s no need to fill out any forms or pay any premiums. Providers like Indian Oil, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas offer this feature to all customers.
This insurance covers losses incurred due to accidents like gas leaks, fires, or cylinder explosions. The consumer receives coverage of up to ₹50 lakh for the entire family. Each family member is covered for up to ₹10 lakh. In case of property damage, compensation of up to ₹2 lakh is available.

In case of death due to an accident, personal accident cover of up to ₹6 lakh is available. In case of medical treatment, the family can receive medical coverage of up to ₹30 lakh. This insurance amount is paid directly to the family, provided the gas cylinder, regulator, pipe, and stove are ISI-marked and have been periodically inspected.
What conditions must be met?
Only consumers who comply with the regulations regarding gas use can avail the insurance benefit. The gas pipe, stove, and regulator must be ISI-marked. There should be no exposed electrical wires in the kitchen. In case of an accident, it is mandatory to inform the gas company and the nearest police station within 30 days.
During a claim, a copy of the FIR, medical bills, hospital records, and, in case of death, the post-mortem report are considered essential documents. The insurance amount is only available to the person in whose name the gas connection is registered. There is no option to add a nominee.

How to file an insurance claim
If an accident involving a gas cylinder occurs, the consumer must first inform their LPG distributor and the police. The insurance company’s team then inspects the site. After the investigation is complete, the claim is approved. The consumer does not need to submit a separate application. The distributor initiates the process on their own. Additionally, customers can also file a claim online through the mylpg.in the portal, making the process even easier.
