The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has now made its services available on the DigiLocker app. Employees using Android smartphones can now check their PF balance and passbook from anywhere. Apart from this, documents like UAN card, Pension Payment Order (PPO), and scheme certificate can also now be accessed digitally. This move will increase convenience and transparency for PF holders.
Earlier, the facility to view the PF passbook was available only on the UMANG app. But, EPFO tweeted on X (earlier Twitter) on 17 July 2025 that Android users will now be able to get this information directly through DigiLocker. However, the use of the UMANG app will continue for iOS users. This is a big step towards making EPFO services more accessible.
New option for UAN activation
EPFO has given another important update on July 18 that now UAN (Universal Account Number) can be verified by Face Authentication through the UMANG app. This process is very easy, secure, and completely digital. This is a revolutionary change for those who earlier faced problems related to documents or OTP in UAN activation.
UAN is ‘mandatory’ for the ELI scheme
UAN activation is not only mandatory to avail EPFO services, but it is also mandatory to avail the benefits of the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme. Under this scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government aims to provide employment and skill training to four crore youth. A budget of ₹ 2 lakh crore has been set for this. UAN activation is the first step to join this scheme, which will help in empowering the youth economically.
EPFO’s ‘special’ advice to its members
EPFO has appealed to all the members to activate their UAN and link Aadhaar to their bank account so that they can take full advantage of all digital services and the ELI scheme. In case of not activating UAN, you will not be able to avail many important services of EPFO, such as checking PF balance, viewing passbook, withdrawing, or transferring PF.
Easy process to activate UAN
Activating your UAN through the UMANG app has now become easier than ever. Follow these steps:
Install and open the UMANG app on your mobile. This app is designed to bring government services in one place.
Go to the ‘EPFO’ Services section in the app. This will give you access to all the services related to EPFO.
Click on the ‘UAN Activation’ option. This option will let you start the process of activating your UAN.
Enter your UAN number, name, date of birth, and registered mobile number correctly. Make sure the information entered matches your EPFO records.
Click on ‘Get OTP’ and proceed by entering the OTP received on your registered mobile number. This is the first step to verify your identity.
Now select the ‘Face Authentication’ option. This is a new and secure feature.
The app will turn on the camera and scan your face as per the instructions appearing on the screen. Make sure the light is adequate and your face is visible.
Once the verification is successful, your UAN will be activated. You will get a confirmation on the screen.
