EPFO Face-ID Update: PF Account Activation Now Possible with Just a Selfie

EPFO Face-ID: The biggest hassle with PF accounts is about to be resolved. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made a significant digital leap by introducing a new feature that uses Face Authentication Technology (FAT). With this feature, employees can now create and activate their own UAN (Universal Account Number) simply by taking a selfie.

This means you won’t have to depend on your company anymore, say goodbye to long processes, and no more frequent trips to the office. This move is seen as a big step towards making the EPFO faster, more transparent, and user-friendly.

What’s the deal with EPFO’s face authentication service?

Previously, it was up to the company to generate the UAN. Then, the employee had to activate it separately. There were often delays, wrong information being linked, and technical issues during this process. To fix this, the EPFO rolled out Self-UAN Generation using Face Authentication Technology starting April 8, 2025. Now, employees can create their own UAN using their Aadhaar-linked face ID and activate it all at once.

How do you generate and activate your UAN with just a selfie?

1. Open the government’s UMANG app

2. Select the Self-UAN Generation or Face Authentication option

3. Input your Aadhaar number

4. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile

5. Snap live selfies using your mobile or laptop camera

6. The system will match your facial recognition with Aadhaar data, and once verified, your UAN will be generated and activated.

This whole process takes just a few minutes.
