The government told Parliament that every second pensioner under the Employees’ Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS-95) run by the EPFO gets a monthly pension of less than ₹1,500. This information was shared by Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje.
Data till March 31, 2025, shared by Minister Shobha Karandlaje, also showed that out of 81,48,490 pensioners under the EPS scheme, only 0.65 percent, or 53,541 pensioners, receive a monthly pension of more than ₹6,000.
Pension Numbers Under EPS-95
The Minister told the House that 49,15,416 pensioners get a monthly pension of only ₹1,500. This means almost every second person, or more than half of the pensioners, receives less than ₹1,500 per month.
The number of pensioners getting less than ₹4,000 per month was 78,69,560. Those receiving less than ₹6,000 per month were 80,94,949.

Pension Amount and Hikes
The Minister also said that the total amount paid under the pension scheme increased from ₹22,112.83 crore in 2022-23 to ₹23,027.93 crore in 2023-24. Trade unions have asked to raise the minimum monthly pension under EPS-95 to ₹9,000. Currently, the minimum pension is ₹1,000.
There is a question about whether the government will increase the minimum pension for private-sector employees. Recently, there was talk of raising it to ₹7,500. Right now, the minimum pension is only ₹1,000.
