Financial Stability Decision

Beginning May 1st, electricity users in Bengaluru will see an increase of 56 paise per unit. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) has raised the prices of electricity bills. This adjustment comes after receiving the green light from the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory and Development Authority (KERC). The aim is to ensure financial stability for power distribution companies.

What’s behind the price increase?

These new rates are being introduced to recover revenue losses from the tariff “true-up” process, which totaled around ₹2,068 crore for the fiscal year 2024-25. The extra charges will be applied monthly from 2024 to 2027 and will be reflected in your electricity bill following the first meter reading in May. This will have a notable effect on the finances of everyday consumers.

The directive states, “BESCOM will determine the amount to be recovered for each active consumer for FY 2024-25, based on actual energy usage during that fiscal year. This amount will be collected in equal monthly installments throughout FY 2026-27, referred to as FY 25 actual charges. Recovery will start from the first meter reading date on or after May 1, 2026, and will continue until the reading on April 30, 2027.”

However, this decision has also sparked public outrage. Many consumers say that the increased electricity bills will put a strain on household budgets during an already high inflationary period. This increase could be a cause for concern, especially for middle-class families.
