The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reported a big drop in the circulation of ₹2000 notes. As of September 30, 2025, the total value of these notes was ₹5,884 crore. This is a big fall from ₹3.56 lakh crore when the withdrawal was announced in May 2023.
₹2000 Notes Are Still Valid
Even though ₹2000 notes are withdrawn from active use, they are still legal. You can use them to pay debts or other payments.
Why ₹2000 Notes Were Withdrawn and How to Deposit Them
The ₹2000 note was made in November 2016 after the demonetization of ₹500 and ₹1000 notes. When enough other notes were available, printing of ₹2000 notes stopped in 2018-19. Most notes were made before March 2017 and are now near their 4-5 year life. Also, this note is not used much in daily transactions.
