Good news for central government employees! On Tuesday, the Ministry of Personnel announced that under the new rules, employees who choose voluntary retirement after 20 years or more of service will get a proportional, guaranteed payment. This means employees taking voluntary retirement will receive a guaranteed pension. This comes as a gift for central government employees just before Diwali.
The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare notified the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2025 in the official gazette on September 2. These rules cover service matters and benefits under the unified pension scheme for employees who joined the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) under the National Pension System (NPS).
VRS Pension Benefits for Employees
The Ministry said employees under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) can take voluntary retirement after 20 years of work.
The Ministry said, “Full pension is only after 25 years. But if an employee takes VRS after 20 years or more, they will get pension based on their years of work.”
Other benefits are also given after retirement. These include 60% of personal contribution, a lump sum of one-tenth of basic pay and allowance for every six months of work, retirement gratuity, leave money, and CGEGIS benefits.
If an employee dies after taking VRS but before pension starts, the legally married spouse will get family pension from that date.
Employee Leader Reaction
Manjit Singh Patel, National President of All India NPS Employees Federation, said this change is very good for all central government employees, especially paramilitary staff.
He added, “This will help employees who cannot work after 20 years of service.”
