DA Hike: Good news government employees. On 5 February, the West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, has unveiled its interim budget ahead of the elections. This budget is designed with the everyday citizen in mind. Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya has made a significant announcement for the state’s government employees, revealing an increase in their dearness allowance (DA). Specifically, the DA has been raised by 4%. This decision is seen as a strategic move by the government right before the elections.
In a related development, the Supreme Court has ordered the payment of the pending DA
While the state government celebrated its budget, the Supreme Court, the nation’s highest judicial authority, made a landmark ruling. The court has mandated that the government pay its employees the overdue dearness allowance (DA) for the period from 2008 to 2019. The Supreme Court emphasized that receiving dearness allowance is a legal entitlement for employees, rather than a mere bonus or act of goodwill from the government.
The court instructed the state government to transfer at least 25% of the outstanding DA into the employees’ accounts by March 6th. It underscored that a welfare state must safeguard its employees from the negative impacts of inflation. This ruling marks a significant triumph for countless employees who have been advocating for their rights for years, from the Kolkata High Court all the way to the Supreme Court.
Salaries of Civic Volunteers and Green Police have been increased
It’s worth noting that in the interim budget, the government has opened its coffers not only for government employees but also for civic volunteers and green police personnel. According to the budget proposal, the monthly salary of these personnel has been directly increased by Rs 1,000. The government has allocated a separate budget of Rs 150 crore for this purpose. These personnel, who play a crucial role in maintaining law and order and traffic management in the state, have been awaiting a long-awaited increase in their income.
