Air Ticket Cancel Rule: News brings significant relief for air travellers. Cancelling your flight ticket at the last minute will no longer result in a full refund. The government is preparing to implement a new system that will automatically include a special type of travel insurance with every air ticket. Once this feature is implemented, passengers cancelling a flight at the last minute will receive a refund of up to 80% of the ticket price. It’s expected that this new system will be implemented within the next two to three months.

Currently, ticket cancellations up to three hours before a flight are considered a no-show, and airlines do not provide any refunds in such cases. In some cases of medical emergencies, a full refund may be available, but this is entirely at the airline’s discretion.

New Travel Insurance: Provides Relief

The new system will include built-in travel insurance, which is being considered to be implemented without imposing any additional burden on passengers. According to a Times of India report, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is working with airlines to develop a system where the insurance premium will be shared between the airlines and insurance companies, meaning no additional fees will be charged to passengers. Currently, passengers can purchase travel insurance separately if they wish, but with the new system, this feature will be included with the ticket.

Refunds for passengers if needed

A major airline has also begun discussions with insurance companies in this regard. According to a senior airline official, they are exploring whether insurance can be included in the minimum fare category of the ticket so that passengers can receive a refund if needed. Sources say that initial estimates suggest that a premium of approximately ₹50 could provide up to 80 percent refunds for tickets cancelled up to four hours before the flight.
