One of the biggest problems associated with FASTag has been the sudden stoppage at toll plazas and the machine prompting for KYV updates. Even with sufficient balance and a properly affixed tag, payments would get stuck. Considering this issue, the NHAI has now taken a major decision that will provide relief to private vehicle owners.

The NHAI has announced the complete elimination of the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) rule, simplifying the FASTag issuance process. This change will be effective from February 1, 2026, and will apply to new FASTags.
Why the KYV Rule Was a Problem
Until now, even after a FASTag was activated, vehicle owners were often asked to resubmit documents, photos, and undergo verification. Sometimes, even with correct information, the tag would be blocked or suspended. This led to disputes at toll plazas and unnecessary delays for drivers.
The KYV process required people to visit bank branches and contact customer care. This process was time-consuming and often failed due to technical reasons.
What Does the NHAI’s New Decision Mean?
According to the NHAI, KYV will not be required for all new FASTags issued on or after February 1, 2026. This exemption will apply only to private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans.
Now, before issuing a FASTag, banks will verify the vehicle registration details against the VAHAN database. If necessary, cross-verification will be done through the Registration Certificate (RC). This means that the entire responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of all information during tag issuance will now rest with the banks.
In Which Cases Might KYV Still Apply?
However, KYV has not been eliminated. If a FASTag is found to be linked to the wrong vehicle, the tag is not properly affixed, there is a suspicion of fraud, or a dispute arises at the toll plaza, then KYV may still be required. Under normal circumstances, vehicle owners will not have to go through any additional process.
What will change for existing FASTag users?
No new rules have been implemented for those who are already using FASTag. Unless a technical or documentation issue arises, they will not be asked to update their KYC (Know Your Customer) information. This will also reduce inconvenience for existing users at toll plazas.
Why is the change not applicable to commercial vehicles?
This exemption is limited to private vehicles only. The KYC process for buses, trucks, and other commercial vehicles will continue as before. The NHAI believes that these vehicles are more prone to misuse, hence stricter rules are necessary for them.

NHAI’s advice for vehicle owners
The NHAI advises vehicle owners to keep their FASTag linked to the correct mobile number and bank account. They should also recharge their FASTag on time to avoid blacklisting, double toll deductions, or other technical problems.
