Transport Minister’s Strict Order
Bihar Transport Minister Shravan Kumar made it clear during a high-level review meeting that making candidates wait long for their licenses after passing the driving test will no longer be tolerated. The government has directed all District Transport Offices (DTOs) to streamline the license and RC printing system.
According to the department, Bihar receives over 55,000 applications every month. To address the growing pressure, it has now been made mandatory for every district to maintain a minimum 90-day stock of printing material (smart cards and ribbons). This will ensure that no one’s license is held up due to a lack of supply. Officials have been warned that any laxity in this process will result in strict action.
Smart Card in 24 Hours
Previously, after passing the driving test in Bihar, it took 15 to 30 days for the card to be printed and delivered to your home. People would sometimes have to wait months for the card to be printed. However, the new system is now completely digital and faster. As soon as you pass your driving test (through the Sarthi Portal), your information will be immediately sent to the printing unit.
The department aims to have your chip-based driving license ready for dispatch within 24 hours of passing the test. This step has been taken to bring transparency and empower the common man. Now, you won’t need to repeatedly visit the clerk to track the status of your license; instead, you’ll receive updates through a text message on your phone.
How to Apply for a Driving License
The process of obtaining a license in Bihar has now become much simpler. You can apply in two ways. The first is online (Sarthi Parivahan Portal). You can register yourself by visiting the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Here, you’ll need to select the ‘New Driving License’ option, upload the required documents, and book a test slot at your convenience.
The second option is offline, where you can fill out the form by visiting your nearest District Transport Office (DTO). The process remains digital, but you’ll need to consult a counter to complete the form. Note that taking a driving test is mandatory in both cases. Your license will only be sent for printing after passing the test.
