What is Apaar ID and how is it different from Aadhaar card?
The work of creating Apaar IDs for students is underway in schools across various states, including Bihar, UP, MP, and Rajasthan. A unique ID is being created for students in all schools, whether government or private, called Apaar. Apaar ID stands for Automatic Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR ID).
This Apaar ID card is being created under the Central Government’s ‘One Nation One Student ID’ scheme. Under this scheme, each student is being issued a 12-digit unique ID number, called Apaar ID. Students will be able to register for Apaar ID online by visiting the official website apaar.education.gov.in. However, this work has to be completed by the schools.
What is an Apaar ID? What details will it contain?
This major change is being implemented in the country’s education sector in light of the recommendations of the New Education Policy 2020. The Apaar ID is a type of ID, similar to an Aadhaar number. The full form of Apaar (APAAR) is Automatic Permanent Academic Account Registry. This Apaar ID will contain details of a student’s entire educational journey, from childhood to higher education. It will record complete details of students’ academic activities. Under this scheme, every student will receive a unique Apaar ID for life.
The Apaar ID card will contain the student’s name, gender, date of birth, address, parent’s name, photo, as well as their educational journey (marksheets, certificates, degrees, diplomas, certificates), character certificate, school transfer certificate, and other documents. Information about the student’s participation in sports competitions, scholarships, awards won, skill training, extracurricular activities, and Olympiads will also be recorded on this ID card. The Apaar ID may also include additional information such as the student’s blood group, height, and weight.
Apaar ID is linked to Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) and DigiLocker, where students can keep their essential documents like exam results and academic credentials and documents safe.
How is Apaar ID different from Aadhaar Card?
The APAAR ID will not replace the Aadhaar card. The Aadhaar card is an identity card issued by the Government of India to Indian citizens. It contains a unique 12-digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The Aadhaar number serves as proof of identity and address for individuals residing anywhere in India. It is not a proof of citizenship or date of birth. The Aadhaar number contains biometric information about an individual, such as their photo, fingerprint, and iris scan details.
It is based on biometrics to facilitate more streamlined and transparent allocation of government benefits and subsidies to Indian citizens. Aadhaar can be used as proof of identity and address, while the APAAR ID will contain information on a student’s entire educational journey, from pre-primary to higher education. This lifelong ID will allow tracking their entire education. It will not replace Aadhaar but will be used solely for tracking educational details.
