Air Ticket Refund: Great news is coming soon for air travelers across the country. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) plans to make major changes to the current system related to air ticket cancellations. Previously, passengers had to pay hefty fees for canceling flight tickets, and refunds took a long time, especially if the ticket was booked through an agent or online travel portal. However, with the implementation of the new rules, this burden on travelers could be significantly reduced.

Proposal to Cancel or Modify Tickets Free

The DGCA has proposed that passengers will be able to cancel or modify their flight tickets within 48 hours of booking without any additional fees. This provision, if implemented, will eliminate additional expenses in the event of travel changes. The regulator states that this initiative will provide both flexibility and security to travelers, ensuring they do not suffer financial losses in the event of a sudden change in travel plans.

Airlines will be solely responsible for refunds.

The DGCA has clarified that whether the ticket was purchased directly from the airline, through an online portal, or through an agent, the airlines will be ultimately responsible for refunds. This provision is being made because refunds often face delays for tickets booked through agents. Once the new rules come into effect, airlines will have to ensure that passengers receive their money on time.

Refunds within 21 days are mandatory

According to the proposed rules, airlines will be required to provide refunds within a maximum of 21 working days for ticket cancellations. However, if the ticket was purchased using a credit card, the refund period will be only 7 days. Those canceling tickets with cash will receive an immediate refund. The core of this system is to ensure that passengers receive their money within the stipulated time frame, regardless of the mode of booking.

Taxes and fees will also be refunded

The new rules also clarify that all taxes and fees, such as airport development fees, user development fees, and service charges, will be refunded, even if the ticket is non-refundable. Furthermore, if a name is misspelled and corrected within 24 hours, no additional charges will be levied. Airlines will also not be able to hold the amount in a credit shell without the customer’s consent.

Cancellation fees will not exceed the base fare

Many passengers have complained that airlines charge arbitrary cancellation fees, often exceeding the base fare. According to the new proposal, cancellation fees will not exceed the base fare and fuel surcharge. This will prevent passengers from facing significant financial losses upon ticket cancellation.
