Birth Certificate: Recent decisions in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have raised serious concerns among many families who obtained birth certificates using Aadhaar. The question now is whether those documents will remain valid. The governments of both states have clarified that Aadhaar cannot be used as proof of date of birth. This is primarily because the date of birth recorded in Aadhaar is not verified against any official document. Therefore, many certificates issued using Aadhaar have begun to be investigated.

Why Aadhaar will not be recognized as a birth proof

The Uttar Pradesh government clarified that the date of birth is not verified by matching it with any authentic document when making an Aadhaar card. Therefore, accepting it as a birth proof is considered unsafe. For government processes, only birth certificates, high school mark sheets, and certificates issued by municipal bodies or the health department will now be considered valid. This rule will apply to everything from appointments to promotions.

The Maharashtra government has also initiated action on this basis. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that birth or death certificates issued solely based on Aadhaar will be considered fake or suspicious and will be immediately cancelled. This step was taken to prevent cases where certificates were being obtained using false documents.

What to do if your Aadhaar-based certificate is cancelled

If your birth certificate was issued solely based on Aadhaar and is now eligible for cancellation, there’s no need to panic. You’ll need to submit valid documents for a new birth certificate.

Valid documents include a high school mark sheet, a hospital-issued birth record, a municipal corporation record, parental documents, or any other official proof that proves your date and place of birth. Apply to the relevant department, submit the documents, and complete the process. This will prevent further fraud and prevent you from facing any problems again. This government step is important to strengthen the authenticity of documents.
