Aadhaar Card: Big news for Aadhaar Card holders. Now you dont need to pay Rs 50. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced several significant Aadhaar-related changes in 2025, which will affect more than one billion people in the country.

UIDAI has increased the fee for Aadhaar updates, effective October 1, 2025. Now, if you want to change details like your name, address, date of birth, or mobile number, you’ll have to pay Rs 75 (previously Rs 50). Biometric updates (fingerprint, iris, or photo) will now cost Rs 125, down from Rs 100. These new fees will remain in effect until 2028. UIDAI states that these changes have been made to address service quality and the cost of technological improvements.

Biometric update now free

UIDAI has provided relief for children. Now, fingerprint and iris scan updates for children between the ages of 7 and 15 will be completely free. Previously, this required a fee. Officials say that children’s faces and fingerprints change over time, making this update necessary. Schools have also been asked to assist in this process so that no child’s Aadhaar becomes inactive.

New document list and stricter rules

In July 2025, UIDAI released a new list of documents required for Aadhaar updates and new enrollments. Now, uniform and clear rules have been set for all Indian citizens, NRIs, OCI cardholders, and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs). UIDAI has also clarified that a person can have only one Aadhaar number. If anyone is found to have a duplicate Aadhaar, action will be taken.

The free update period is over, now a fee will be charged.
UIDAI had provided free online updates to individuals until June 14, 2025. However, this deadline has now expired. Any updates will now require a fixed fee. Experts say that the free update feature may be available again for a limited period in the future, so keep an eye on the UIDAI website.

Starting November 1, 2025, UIDAI will be launching a new digital update system. Under this system, Aadhaar cardholders will be able to update information such as name, address, date of birth, gender, and mobile number completely online. This means there will be no need to visit an Aadhaar service center to correct even minor errors. The new system will automatically verify the card through a government database, eliminating the need for document uploads or manual verification.

Rural areas will benefit

This move by UIDAI will be especially beneficial for people in villages and small towns, where previously long lines were required for updates. Now, this process can be completed from home via OTP verification through the myAadhaar portal or the UIDAI app. However, biometric updates (fingerprint, iris, or photo) will still require a visit to an Aadhaar service center.
