Pulling the chain without reason can be costly
Keeping the safety of railway passengers paramount, an Emergency Alarm Chain is installed in all the coaches on the train. You can use this emergency alarm chain in any type of emergency. However, if you misuse this emergency alarm chain or pull it without any valid reason, you may also have to go to jail! Under Section 141 of the Railway Act 1989, pulling the emergency alarm chain without any valid reason is a punishable offense. Violators of this law can be fined up to ₹ 1000 or jailed for up to 1 year. In some cases, you may have to pay a fine as well as go to jail. Therefore, take special care of this rule while traveling on a train and avoid pulling the chain without any valid reason.
When can the emergency alarm chain be used
The emergency alarm chain can be used only and only in emergencies. You can pull the chain in the following circumstances:
- If a fire breaks out in a moving train during the journey
- If a child or an elderly person is unable to board the train and the train starts moving.
- If a passenger suddenly falls ill during the journey and needs immediate medical help.
