8th Pay Commission: Key Announcement Made in Parliament for Govt Employees

8th Pay Commission: The government has confirmed that the 8th Central Pay Commission is officially set up and will provide its recommendations within the designated timeframe. In a written reply to questions posed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, the Finance Ministry mentioned that a notification for the commission’s establishment was released on November 3, 2025. MPs were curious about which matters the commission would examine and the expected timeline for putting its recommendations into action.

What is the detail?

According to the government, the 8th Pay Commission will look into the pay scales, allowances, pension structure, and working conditions of central government employees and pensioners. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary noted that the commission has been allotted 18 months to deliver its report. Based on the current schedule, the report should be ready by 2027. However, the government has yet to reveal the plan for implementing the recommendations or if a phased approach has been created.

How much will it burden the government budget?

There was also a discussion in Parliament regarding the potential impact of the 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations on the central government’s budget. The government indicated that it is currently impossible to estimate the costs. The true financial implications will only become clear once the Commission’s recommendations are submitted and approved by the government. This suggests that budget planning will occur only after the Commission’s final report is available.

Experts believe that if the 8th Pay Commission is implemented, the minimum basic salary could increase significantly. The increase in the fitment factor could directly increase employees’ salaries. Additionally, changes are expected in the method of calculating dearness allowance (DA), which could increase in-hand salaries. Allowances like house rent allowance (HRA) and travel allowance (TA) may also be revised according to the new structure. However, reports of implementation from February 2026 have not yet been officially confirmed.

Nationwide strike on 12 February 2026

Meanwhile, employee unions have begun increasing pressure on the government. The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers (CCGEW) has announced a nationwide one-day strike on February 12, 2026. Their demands include 20% interim relief, 50% merger of dearness allowance into basic pay, and the abolition of the NPS and the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Amidst questions in Parliament and mounting pressure on the streets, all eyes will be on the 8th Pay Commission’s progress.
