8th Pay Commission- Big update revealed regarding 8th Pay Commission. The central government has hinted at announcing the appointment of the chairman and members of the new pay commission. It has been more than six months since the Modi government announced the 8th Pay Commission, whose term is to begin from January 1, 2026. However, the progress in the appointment of members and chairman and finalizing the Terms of Reference (ToR) has not been as expected.

In such a situation, more than one crore serving employees and pensioners are eagerly waiting for the TOR to be notified by the government, which will pave the way for recommendations for revision of salary and pension of employees.

The National Joint Consultative Mechanism (NC JCM), representing central government employees and pensioners, had submitted its suggestions for the TOR to the Union Cabinet Secretary after the government sought recommendations. Let us tell you that NC-JCM is a platform for dialogue between the government and its employees.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha member Sagarika Ghosh asked the government about the date of release of the official notification approving the formation of the Eighth Central Pay Commission. In a written reply to this, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that the government has received suggestions from various stakeholders and will issue the official notification in due time.

When will the government appoint the chairman and members?

He also asked the government if it has finalised the names of the panel members and chairman. A question was also asked about the likely time-frame for these appointments. To this, Choudhary replied, “The chairman and members of the 8th Pay Commission will be appointed after the notification of the 8th Pay Commission is issued by the government.”

Recommendations within timeline

The Rajya Sabha member also asked about the progress of the ToR and whether the ministry has set any specific timeline for the commission to submit its recommendations. In response, the minister said suggestions have been sought from key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel and Training and the states. Choudhary said the Eighth Pay Commission will submit its recommendations within the timeline given in the ToR.
