Muharram Holiday- This time Muharram can be celebrated on 6th or 7th July 2025, which will be decided after the sighting of the moon. On this occasion, banks, schools, government offices and stock markets are likely to remain closed across the country. Trading on NSE, BSE will also be affected due to Muharram.

When is Muharram?

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the beginning of the Islamic New Year. This year the date of Muharram in India can be 6 or 7 July 2025, which will be decided on the sighting of the moon. If the moon is seen on the night of 5 July, then the holiday will be on 6 July, otherwise on 7 July. On the day of Muharram, government and private schools, colleges, banks, post offices and government offices will remain closed in many states of India. Since it is considered a festival of national importance, it is a public holiday in most states.

Status of banks and share market

Banking services will also be affected on Muharram. Banks will not function and those who want to make important transactions are advised to complete them in advance so that there is no problem later. However, services like online banking, UPI, net banking will remain operational.

There will be no trading on NSE and BSE on the day of Muharram. This will affect segments like equity, derivatives, currency and interest rate derivatives. At the same time, morning trading of MCX (Multi Commodity Exchange) will remain closed, but evening trading can start from 5 pm to 11:30 pm.

Why is Muharram celebrated?

Muharram is one of the four holy months of Islam. Its 10th day ‘Ashura’ is very special for the Shia Muslim community. On this day, the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in Karbala is remembered. This day is a symbol of renunciation, sacrifice and fight for truth.
