PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme is an ambitious initiative of the Central Government, aimed at providing affordable and clean electricity to the common citizens of the country. This scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2024. Under this scheme, solar panels are installed on the rooftops of homes, allowing consumers to generate their own electricity and get relief from their monthly electricity bills. Due to the abundant sunlight in India, this scheme is considered to have long-term benefits.

Government’s Objective behind the Scheme
Through this scheme, the government aims to reduce dependence on electricity and promote renewable energy. Its primary goal is to increase monthly savings by reducing electricity expenses. Furthermore, this scheme also helps protect the environment because solar energy is completely pollution-free.
Benefits under the PM Surya Ghar Scheme
Under this scheme, beneficiaries receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month. The government provides subsidies for installing solar panels, reducing the overall cost. If your home generates excess electricity, you can sell it to the grid to generate additional income. The entire process is conducted through an online portal, making the application easy.
Subsidy and Financial Assistance Details
Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, subsidies are provided based on the solar system’s capacity. A subsidy of ₹30,000 is available for a 1-kilowatt system, ₹60,000 for a 2-kilowatt system, and up to ₹78,000 for a 3-kilowatt system or more. Several states, such as Delhi, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, are also providing additional subsidies, further enhancing the benefits.
Loan and EMI Facility
If individuals do not have the upfront funds to install solar panels, loans are available from government-authorised banks at low interest rates. With easy EMI options, even middle- and low-income individuals can easily avail of this scheme.
Eligibility for PM Surya Ghar Yojana
Only a person who is a permanent resident of India and owns the house and its roof can benefit from this scheme. The house must not already have a solar system installed. Tenants can only benefit from this scheme if they have the landlord’s consent and are involved in the application process.
