Bank Strike: Major shock to common people. Banks nationwide will experience disruptions for the next four days commencing today due to an extended closure period initiated by a countrywide bank strike on September 11th led by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). Following the strike on September 11th, bank operations in various states will be on hold on the subsequent Saturday, Sunday, and during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Consequently, transactions at bank branches will be directly impacted.
The schedule for the closures is as follows:
1. September 11 (Friday): Nationwide bank strike organized by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).
2. September 12 (Saturday): Regular monthly bank holiday nationwide as it falls on the second Saturday of the month.
3. September 13 (Sunday): Standard weekly bank closure.
4. September 14 (Monday): Banks in different states will be shut down in observance of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar.
The strike on September 11th was called to address various longstanding demands against the government and bank management. The primary issue is the implementation of a five-day work week, based on an agreement signed by the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and bank unions on March 8, 2024. Additionally, bank unions are contesting the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) structure for senior bank officers and are advocating for modifications.
Despite the closure of physical branches, banking services will continue through digital platforms, allowing customers to conduct regular transactions such as fund transfers, bill payments, and online banking uninterrupted through UPI, internet banking, and mobile banking. While ATMs and other self-service banking facilities will remain operational for cash withdrawals, services requiring in-person visits like document submission, check clearance, and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes may experience delays.
Customers are advised to contact their respective branches before visiting in person and are encouraged to utilize digital alternatives for transactions like remittances and bill payments. Those dealing with check processing should plan their financial activities considering the four-day holiday period.
Furthermore, in the event that the demands of bank employees are not met, future disruptions in banking services are anticipated, with strikes planned for September 28, 29, and 30, followed by an indefinite strike starting on October 26, 2026. While banks aim to minimize inconvenience to the public during these times, some delays in branch services may occur.
