Bank Strike: If you have any important banking tasks, make sure to complete them ahead of time. A strike by bank employees is scheduled for September and October, which could disrupt banking services for several days. It’s important to note that discussions between the bank employee unions and the Indian Banks Association regarding the demand for a five-day work week ended without agreement. No consensus was reached during the meeting on September 4th. Following this, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) announced that it cannot delay the planned nationwide bank strike on September 11, 2026. This situation may lead to significant impacts on banking services.

In a post on X, UFBU stated, “The meeting between UFBU and IBA on September 4th did not yield any positive outcomes. The organization noted that issues such as the five-day banking system, discriminatory PLI, and other unresolved matters remain outstanding. Therefore, there is no justification for postponing the nationwide bank strike scheduled for September 11th.”

Bank Strike Dates

– September 11, 2026: One-day nationwide bank strike
– September 28-30, 2026: Three-day nationwide bank strike
– From October 26, 2026: Indefinite nationwide strike

What Happened in the Meeting?

According to UFBU, the IBA convened a meeting with representatives of bank unions to address the demands outlined in the strike notice. The IBA urged the unions to reconsider the strike decision and to resolve the issues through dialogue. However, UFBU asserts that these matters have been under discussion for an extended period, yet no tangible solutions have been found. As a result, the unions believe there is no compelling reason to postpone the strike.

What is the Demand?

The proposal for a five-day work week in banks entails modifications to the working days of bank employees. Once implemented, banks will be closed on all Saturdays except for the second and fourth. In exchange, bank employees will work approximately 40 minutes longer each day from Monday. ensuring that customers’ access to banking services is not significantly reduced. This proposal is part of the agreement and joint note signed between the IBA and bank unions on March 8, 2024. Unions say that this proposal has been submitted for government approval for a long time, but no decision has yet been made. Therefore, the UFBU is demanding that the government approve and implement it soon.

Questions raised regarding PLI

Bank unions have raised questions about the new PLI (Performance Linked Incentive) system for senior officers. UFBU says that it was previously agreed with the IBA that PLI would be given based on the overall performance of the bank and the incentive days would be equal for all employees and officers up to Scale VII. However, in the new system, different rules have been made for different levels of officers. Under this, officers of Scale IV and above can get PLI for a maximum of 365 days, whereas for officers up to Scale III, this limit is only 15 days. Unions believe that this difference is not fair and they should be consulted before implementing this scheme.

People may have trouble

If no agreement is reached between bank unions and the IBA, the proposed bank strike on September 11th could occur. This could impact branch operations and cause problems for customers with certain essential tasks. However, services such as internet banking, mobile banking, and ATMs may continue to operate. The impact on these services may vary from bank to bank.
