Bank Holiday: Big news for bank customers. There is widespread confusion surrounding bank holidays for Muharram and Ashura, with changes in holiday dates based on moon sightings leading to uncertainty about bank operations. Before heading out for any banking tasks, it’s advisable to consult the official holiday list of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to determine whether banks will be open or closed in your city on June 26th.
Current Status on June 25
As per the RBI’s official holiday schedule, most bank branches throughout India are open today, Thursday, June 25, except for the Vijayawada circle in Andhra Pradesh observing a holiday for Muharram. Today, banks are operating normally in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bihar, and other states, allowing customers to carry out transactions like deposits, withdrawals, and check clearances without any inconvenience.

Closure Tomorrow, June 26
On Friday, June 26, 2026, banks will be closed in many parts of the country due to Ashura/Muharram. Eighteen major banking circles, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, and others, will observe a holiday on this day.
Reason for Date Change in Kerala
Initially, the Kerala government had intended to declare June 25th a public holiday for Muharram. However, after verifying the moon sighting and consulting with local Muslim groups, the state government decided to shift the official holiday to June 26th. Consequently, banks and government offices in Kerala will be open today, June 25th, and closed tomorrow, June 26th.

Online banking services will remain operational
Although banks will be closed for four days next week, this will not impact customers’ essential banking services. Online banking services remain available across the country without interruption, even during bank holidays. Customers can easily use these digital services to transact their money. Anyone can use UPI or their respective bank’s mobile app to make payments or receive money from others. All these services operate 24 hours a day, whether banks are open or closed.
However, these services may be temporarily suspended due to scheduled maintenance, which banks inform customers about in advance. Fund transfer requests can also be made through internet banking using NEFT, RTGS transfer forms, demand draft request forms, and checkbook forms. In addition to these options, card services include credit cards, debit cards, and ATM cards.
