Why will banks stay shut today, Tuesday, 22 September?

Banks will stay shut throughout Jharkhand today, Tuesday, September 22. Banks won’t be operating here because of Karma Puja. Based on the Jharkhand government’s holiday schedule for 2026, educational institutions will be closed on September 22 and 23 to celebrate Karma Puja. Banks across Jharkhand will remain shut on September 22 in observance of Karma Puja. All major government and private banks operating here—including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara, Axis, HDFC, ICICI, and others—will be closed. Except for Assam and Kerala, banking services will continue normally in every other state.

What takes place during Karma Puja?

Karma Puja is a cherished local celebration in Jharkhand that honors nature and farming traditions. About a week before Karma Puja, women plant grain seeds in special baskets known as Jawa, using sand gathered from nearby rivers or ponds. These seeds receive devoted attention and regular worship throughout the seven-day period. On the festival day itself, branches from the Karma tree are honored in prayer.

The Karma deity is believed to bring joy, wealth, good health, and safety to households. After the puja ceremony concludes, people engage in traditional Karma dancing that continues through the night, accompanied by rhythmic drumming and cymbal sounds. The following morning, the Karma branches are respectfully returned to the river or pond.

Will bank locations operate elsewhere in the country?

Except in Jharkhand, banking institutions will function normally across all other states, including Delhi, UP, Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and beyond.

September 25 – Banking services in Gangtok will be unavailable due to Indrajatra celebrations.

 

September 26 – Banks will be closed as it’s the fourth Saturday.
