Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder keeps on impressing with a combination of aggressive styling and fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain choices. Latest updates have also added more to safety and comfort features, and it has become a serious player in India’s mid-size SUV segment. Following is a closer examination of its looks, features, engine performance and overall value.

Interior and Features

The SUV features a spacious cabin with spacious, supportive seats that can accommodate five adults with ease. Ambient lighting and the panoramic sunroof enhance cabin appeal. Convenience is enhanced with ventilated front seats, wireless charging, rear AC vents, and more than four USB ports. Toyota i-Connect offers over 55 connected features such as remote engine start, vehicle tracking, and health monitoring. A customisable head-up display, tilt and telescopic steering, and paddle shifters add to driver convenience.

Engine and Performance

Toyota has fitted the Hyryder with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. The 1490cc engine produces 91bhp with 122Nm torque, coupled with an electric motor adding 79bhp and 141Nm. This setup, governed by an e-CVT transmission, sees seamless switching between electric and petrol. The car feels peppy in city overtakes and highway cruising. Fuel efficiency is impressive with up to 27.97kmpl as claimed by ARAI. Although the 12.4-second 0-100kmph isn’t exciting, the ride is smooth and relaxed, but not sporty.

Variants and Pricing

The Hyryder is sold in 18 variants priced between ₹11.34 lakh and ₹20.19 lakh ex-showroom. It is powered by petrol, CNG, and hybrid fuel, and comes with manual and automatic transmissions. The AWD model now also gets a six-speed automatic gearbox. Toyota also introduced a limited edition recently with cosmetic changes and accessory packs with no change in the powertrain.

Mileage and Efficiency

Mileage numbers are one of the strong points for this SUV. The hybrid model has a top of 27.97kmpl (ARAI certified), while petrol manual and automatic models provide 21.11kmpl and 20.12kmpl accordingly. The CNG model provides 26.6 km/kg. Real-world mileage in the hybrid was 17.7kmpl in city and 27.38kmpl on highway, indicating how well it performs under varying driving conditions.

Safety Features

Toyota has also made six airbags a standard feature on all models. It also provides disc brakes for all four wheels, ABS with EBD, and electronic stability control as well. A 360-degree camera, rear parking sensors, hill hold control, and ISOFIX anchors complete its safety pack. It does not feature advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, and it is yet to be rated by NCAP.
