Tata Safari: Tata Motors is preparing to launch its top-of-the-line Safari SUV with a petrol engine for the first time. The vehicle, which has thus far only been available with diesel engines, has been seen under testing. Through this, Tata hopes to make the Safari more competitive against contenders such as Mahindra XUV700 and MG Hector Plus by providing an even cheaper and more versatile engine offering.

Seen on Roads Under Testing

Recent spy photographs taken by car enthusiast Praveen Kumar have provided an insight into Tata’s future plans. The photos uncovered two test models — one camouflaged and the other uncamouflaged. The sightings have set SUV enthusiasts buzzing, particularly those looking for a petrol variant in the Tata stable.

The New 1.5L TGDI Petrol Engine

Under the bonnet, the new Tata Safari will feature a brand-new 1.5L TGDI turbo petrol motor. Developed internally by Tata, this four-cylinder unit has direct gasoline injection. With an estimated 170 PS of maximum power and 280 Nm of torque, this engine ensures decent performance. While falling short of Mahindra’s 2.0L petrol motor in terms of power, it will look to find a balance between performance and price.

Only Diesel So Far

Since its comeback, the Safari has offered only a 2.0L turbo diesel unit procured from Stellantis. Even at the time of launch of its facelift, everyone was anticipating a petrol variant to be launched — but it did not occur. Now, with this confirmed news, Tata is finally shifting towards a more varied engine portfolio.

Expected Launch Timeline

The new petrol engine is in the process of development but should make its debut towards the end of this year. It will be launched initially in the Safari and Harrier models. The company may later introduce this engine in its future Sierra and Curvv models as well. This new addition will provide customers with additional choices and allow Tata to price its vehicles more competitively in the market.
