Maruti Suzuki: Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automobile manufacturer, experienced a steep decline in June 2025. Total sales for the month were 1,67,993 units, illustrating a clear drop both year-wise and month-wise. Domestic sales declined to 1,18,906 units, down by 13.31% from June of previous year and 12.54% below May 2025. In numerical terms, this translates to Maruti selling 18,257 fewer vehicles than June 2024, and 17,056 fewer than only the last month.
Mini Segment Takes a Major Hit
Maruti’s mini car segment, which includes the Alto and S-Presso, was badly affected. Sales fell to just 6,414 units in June, compared to 9,395 units in the same month last year. Customers seem to be losing interest in this budget-friendly category.
Compact Cars Lose Popularity
Compact cars like the Baleno, Swift, WagonR, and Dzire also faced a downturn. Maruti sold 54,177 units in this segment, down from 64,049 units in the previous year. Even segment leaders experienced lower enthusiasm from customers.
Mid-Size Experiences Small Relief
The Ciaz-led mid-size sedan category posted 1,028 units of sales. This is more than the 572 units recorded last year, but the Ciaz is in the final stage of its product life cycle, capping future growth in this segment.
SUV Segment Falls Short Despite New Models
Maruti’s UV portfolio, with Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, XL6, and Jimny, sold 47,947 units in June. That’s lower than last year’s 52,373 units, showing that even with newer models on offer, customer response stayed cool.
Exports and OEM Sales Offer Some Relief
While domestic sales declined, Maruti received a fillip through exports and OEM partner sales. Exports rose by 21.94%, while OEM sales also rose by 6.46%, providing the brand with some cushion in what otherwise would have been a tough month.
Why Budget Cars Are Losing Steam
Maruti Senior Executive Officer Rahul Bharti clarified that the budget car market has lost its status as the growth engine. Entry-level car prices have increased by almost 70% since 2019, and sales declined sharply. Customers are finding these prices hard to handle, and affordability has turned into a serious concern in the market.
What Lies Ahead for Maruti
June 2025 proved to be a mixed bag for Maruti Suzuki. Exports and larger models helped offset some losses, but the decline in mini and compact car sales is something that is concerning. If pricing stabilizes and new launches start hitting the market soon, Maruti might still recapture its robust sales figures in the next couple of months.
