Mahindra XEV 9e: India’s electric SUV market is becoming crowded with new entries and overseas competitors. Mahindra has launched the feature-rich XEV 9e, while Vietnamese manufacturer VinFast enters the market with the VF7. Consumers are now asking if they should take Mahindra’s tried-and-tested SUV or wait for VinFast’s premium model.

Mahindra XEV 9e

Mahindra’s XEV 9e is ready to roll out with trusted technology now. It has two battery options — 59kWh and 79kWh — with real-world ranges of between 400 and 550 km. The highest variant goes from 0 to 100 km/h in only 6.8 seconds. With its coupe-inspired rear, LED DRLs, and 19-inch alloy wheels, it cuts a distinctive figure on the road. A 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating adds to the confidence for buyers.

Within, the cabin is filled with amenities such as a 43-inch triple-screen infotainment system driven by the Snapdragon 8295 processor, Alexa connectivity, and Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound with Dolby Atmos. Mahindra’s ADAS Level 2+ system, which is calibrated for Indian roads, has adaptive cruise, lane centring, blind spot monitoring, and emergency braking. The SUV also gets fast charging, which reaches 80% in around 20 minutes using a 175kW charger.

VinFast VF7

VinFast VF7 introduces new Italian design language from Torino Design, with strong V-shaped lights and pure SUV lines. It is a little smaller than the XEV 9e but has a longer wheelbase, which can translate to improved rear-seat comfort. The VF7 has both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive powertrains. The AWD is strong, accelerating 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

The inside is contemporary with minimalist design. It features a 12.9-inch screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a head-up display in place of conventional dials. VinFast guarantees over-the-air software update, Alexa voice control, and an entire ADAS set with 22 functions. But its India safety rating has not been confirmed yet.

Price and Availability

Mahindra XEV 9e costs between ₹21.90 lakh and ₹30.50 lakh, varying with the battery size and variant. It is being sold throughout India through over 300 EV-enabled dealerships. VinFast has also begun receiving bookings for the VF7 at a price of ₹21,000, and deliveries will commence in September 2025. The likely price of the VF7 varies from ₹25 lakh to ₹50 lakh, which is marginally higher than Mahindra’s cost.

Should You Wait or Buy?

Buyers seeking an instant, high-featured EV with established service support should look at the Mahindra XEV 9e. It offers performance, safety, and advanced tech at affordable prices. Individuals who are willing to wait for a new brand, with AWD performance and premium design, can wait for the VinFast VF7.
