Old Car Ban: Delhi’s stricter rules have left many vehicle owners worried. From July 1, petrol cars older than 15 years and diesel cars older than 10 years are banned from getting fuel in the city. This change has created anxiety among thousands of owners, especially luxury vehicle users, who fear having to sell or scrap their cars at throwaway prices. However, you still have time to choose wisely and protect your investment.
Why action is necessary
Authorities have stepped up enforcement on vehicles that ignore these fresh rules. Automatic number plate recognition cameras are now active at petrol pumps to catch violators and issue penalties. If someone is found driving an outdated petrol car in Delhi, they face a fine of ₹10,000, while two-wheeler owners may have to pay ₹5,000. Vehicles could even be seized if they repeatedly break the rules. That is why thinking ahead is vital.
Scrap policy benefit
One reliable option is taking your vehicle to a registered scrapping center under the government’s scrap policy. These facilities follow environmentally safe methods to dismantle and recycle your car. After scrapping, owners receive a Certificate of Deposit (CoD), which can offer road tax savings of up to 25% on a new private vehicle or 15% for commercial vehicles. Apart from this, you can earn anywhere from ₹50,000 to ₹3 lakh based on the car’s weight and condition. Though the resale value of scrap is lower than selling, it is quick and hassle-free.
Selling outside Delhi NCR
If you want a better return, selling your car in a different state outside Delhi-NCR is another route. Many states do not have the same strict age bans on vehicles, giving you a wider market and possibly better prices. You will need to handle shifting the car to that new state, registering it with the local RTO, and paying any related road taxes. While this path involves more paperwork and effort, it can help you recover a higher resale amount.
Switching to CNG
A cleaner and practical third solution is converting your old petrol car to run on CNG. Delhi’s government supports greener fuel, and if your vehicle clears the fitness and emission checks, you can install an ARAI-approved CNG kit. The cost ranges from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh but saves you money in the long run because CNG is cheaper than petrol or diesel. It also extends your car’s life on Delhi’s roads.

CNG conversion limitations
However, not every vehicle, especially old diesel models, can shift to CNG due to design and technical reasons. Also, Delhi still struggles with a limited number of CNG filling stations, which can be a challenge. Still, if your car is compatible, converting to CNG remains a solid way to stay on the road legally and affordably.
